With flexible pitch sizes and the latest turf technology, Edinburgh’s new 3G football ground is pitch perfect! Meadowbank Sports Centre are delighted to be almost ready to open their brand new FIFA 1* pitch. Contractors have been hard at work over the last few months dismantling the old and re-building top class facilities from scratch. The ground accommodates 11-a-side games or three 7-a-side pitches. Featuring floodlighting and 3G turf, players’ comfort and safety, as well as spectators’ enjoyment, have been paramount in the design and finish of the build. The £450,000 project was funded primarily by CashBack, the Scottish Government’s initiative to invest money confiscated from criminals in Scotland’s community football projects, with additional funding from sportscotland. This is a fantastic addition to Meadowbank and the north of the city. Leith Athletic is the home club, and the pitch will also be available for use by the wider Edinburgh community. Edinburgh Leisure are delighted, along with Cashback, sportscotland and the City of Edinburgh Council to be collectively inspiring Edinburgh to be a more active and healthy city.

What does '3G pitch' mean?

The artificial turf named '3G' (Third Generation) is a surface created using synthetic fibres and rubbers, made to look like grass. Unlike previous artificial surfaces, the pitch does not contain sand, therefore it is much less likely to cause friction burns to the skin. The main reason for its use is maintenance—artificial turf stands up to heavy use, particularly in sports, and requires no irrigation or trimming.

How much to build a 3g football pitch?

The 3G surfaces have evolved to mimic the playing characteristics of a natural field but can be used endlessly in all weather conditions. The third generation surfaces is what all the premier league teams train on and to build a full size football pitch with fencing, floodlighting, drainage, groundworks and surfacing costs approximately 600k. This price is based on the site being good access and existing level conditions to the site.
